My Bio

My name is Scott Bullinger and I'm a Fly Fishing Addict. Hello Scott. :)

I grew up in Oklahoma a bass, crappie, carp and catfish fisherman on the waters of Grand Lake. My grandparents had a cabin in the Drowning Creek area and still do to this day. One of the first fish I ever caught was a carp on a little Zebco setup at the age of 5, some day I'll have to dig up the picture of me holding on for dear life. I grew up fishing off our docks, from the banks or from a little boat trolling the banks. Growing up, Fly Fishing was something that never crossed my mind. Even when I hit my 20s and my dad was getting into Fly Fishing, he couldn't convince me to take it up...it just seemed too difficult.

...moved to St. Louis, MO in 1996...No fishing from '96 to '07 except for the rare trip back to Grand Lake. :(

In the Spring of 2007, I was with buddies at a Pizza joint with our families. The topic of fishing came up, which led into Fly Fishing discussions and that's when things went downhill. Next thing I knew I'm on the Meramec river in the worst wind conditions, using a borrowed fly rod and not able to cast worth a damn; but I was hooked. How did I get hooked when I kept casting bird nests in the wind? Why was something I easily dismissed in the past now slowly becoming an obsession? Well, all that I can guess was now I was doing it on my terms and now I was standing in a river (not a dock) and there was peace and serenity all around me. Although I didn't catch a damn thing except tree limbs and rocks, I was relaxed.

The next week, I went out and bought my own fly rod and reel. Since then I've been buying more gadgets than I know I really need, but man I love toys and if this sport doesn't feed that habit I don't know what does. After that first trip, we went back to the Meramac a few times and then spent the rest of the year on the Current river. I managed to catch about 12 trout and loved every minute of it. No kids...no wife...go past the wire and really not anyone else around you but your buddies. Oh the joy.

This year I made my first trip to the White River in April of 2008 under the guidance of Jimmy Traylor. Man, what an experience. I've never landed so many rainbow in my life and if I remember correctly, I caught more fish in those two days than I did my entire first year of fly fishing. So now I have another love, the White River.

To me fly fishing has become more about the experience of the hunt, just me...the river....and the trout. Whether I catch anything or not, it doesn't matter (well I prefer to catch something). In the end though a bad day of fishing beats a day in the office anytime.

Hey Man, sorry it took me so long to get back. I've been busy and sadly not with fishing. My casting is more than likely rustier than hell. I'm sure I'll be calling upon you in the Spring. Hope all is well.

Groovy quotes

It's easy to grin / When your ship comes in / And you've got the stock market beat. / But the man worthwhile, / Is the man who can smile, / When his shorts are too tight in the seat.
